Lost City Dunes Center and Film Site Tour

100 years ago, in the sands of the Guadalupe Dunes, Cecile B DeMille created the religious epic film, The Ten Commandments. It was the largest and most expensive set ever produced and set a precedent for the Hollywood film industry. Nearly every resident of Guadalupe participated in the making of the film in some capacity, from acting as extras to feeding and watering livestock. When filming was completed, DeMille was to remove the set but instead, he buried it. And there it remained hidden for 88 years.

In 2011, filmmaker Peter Brosnan secured permission and funding to do the first archaeological dig in the Guadalupe Dunes, uncovering rare artifacts from the set. Many of the large pieces are now on display at the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center in Guadalupe.

To celebrate the 100th Anniversary of this piece of history, events will be taking place throughout Guadalupe on October 8th, 2023. Be a part of this momentous occasion and get a first hand look at DeMille's vision and creation of The Ten Commandments.
