Discover the hidden beauty of our local Oso Flaco Lake on a wildflower hike led by botanist, Steve Junak and Dunes Center. This hike will offer both scenic exploration and insightful education on our vibrant floral ecosystems.<\/p>\n
Botanist Bio: Steve Junak<\/p>\n
Steve has been studying the plant life of the California Islands and the central California coast for more than 50 years. He worked at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden for 37 years as herbarium curator, educator, and field botanist, and is now a research associate and botany instructor there.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n In addition to writing a book about the plants of San Nicolas Island and co-authoring a book about the plants of Santa Cruz Island, Steve has also written or co-authored more than 50 scientific articles, reports, and book chapters about the flora of the California and Baja California islands.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n Steve has led hundreds of botanical field trips to our local area. He is especially interested in how people use local plants, both native and non-native species, in their daily lives. He is also very interested in the interactions between our local plants and the ecosystem that surrounds us.<\/em><\/p>\n Distance: 3miles roundtrip<\/p>\n Parking: Park at Oso Flaco Lake and be prepared for a $5 fee. Restrooms are available at the Oso Flaco Lake State Park lot which is another \u00be miles west of Beigle Road at the end of Oso Flaco Lake Road (there are no restrooms along the hike route). Note: Pets, smoking or tobacco products, or alcohol are not allowed on the Refuge, including the parking area, or other State Parks and Private properties accessed during the hike. Pets may not be left in cars in the parking areas.<\/p>\n
