Dunite Walk: Art, History, and Poetry

April 15, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Learn about the Dunites from the eyes of Ella Thorp-Ellis, the Dune Child. Ella was four years old when her parents arrived at the Oceano dunes and joined the Dunites. The hike discussions will highlight Dunites like Gavin Arthur, Ella Young, Elwood Decker, Edward C. St. Claire and the “Patron Saint of the Dunites,” Dr. Rudolph (Rudy) Gerber. In Ella’s own words firsthand stories will be retold about her meeting and spending time with John Steinbeck and Edward Weston.

This approximately 3 mile and 2-hour hike will take us from the parking lot out to the beach overlook. Don’t be intimidated by the distance of this hike. If you only want to do a 1- or 2-mile hike, or even just a 100-yard hike, you shouldn’t be disappointed. During the hike at several locations, we will stop to talk about the Dunites and Ella’s experiences as the only child amongst the Dunite adults.

So, on April 15, 2023 be at the parking lot at 10:00 a.m. and join our docent Steven Myli for what is sure to be a fun and informative adventure
