The Creative Writing Program was piloted in 2013 as one of the Dunes Center’s after school programs in an effort to spark student interest in natural science subjects. The result was dozens of local students creating work that is now published in the Library of Congress and the chance to share their success with the public and their families.
This is the second iteration of the Dune Forum as a children’s book written by local students. Learning becomes much more fun and significant when children are engaged in the lesson plan. Students in the Dunes Center’s Creative Writing program were ecstatic to be writing about their favorite plants, birds, bugs, and mammals. Writers will often search for inspiration before they begin the writing process, and there aren’t many other sources of inspiration as beautiful or as plentiful as Mother Nature.
Our hope is that the Creative Writing Program has instilled students with confidence, inspiration, and hope for a more ecologically sustainable society.
