Reports to: Educational and Public Programs Coordinator


About the Dunes Center:

The Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center is a natural history museum at the heart of historic downtown Guadalupe that strives to promote the conservation and restoration of the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes ecosystem. We offer inspiring educational programs aimed to bring awareness to our local natural areas and unveil new topics to students in our community.


Internship Description:

Hours per week: 10-20 hours per week


Museum Collections interns will support staff in transferring the Dunes Center’s permanent collection to an online cataloging database. This part-time service is a mutually beneficial partnership that will enable the Dunes Center to complete the transition between written records and an online database accessible to the public, while the intern gains experiences that can be used for college or graduate school admissions, work experience, and personal fulfillment. Generally, this position requires an interest in natural history, museum collections, experience working with excel, and a willingness to learn.


Internship Tasks Include:

-          Taking pictures of specimens

-          Background research on specimens

-          Data entry and cataloging specimens

-          Introduction to Catalog it, an online collection database



Interns should possess the following abilities:

-          An interest in natural history collections

-         Ability to work with large sets of data and stay organized

-          Experience with Microsoft Excel

-          Access to Wi-Fi and a Laptop/Computer

-          Pass a background check


Upon completion, interns will receive:

-          Work experience(s) to draw upon when they enter the profession of their choice, including experience in cataloging and data entry for specimens in the Dunes Center’s permanent collection.



-          Letter of recommendation from the Dunes Center upon completion of the internship

-          Work experience in the field of museum collections and natural history

-          Internship credit may be able to be arranged with your school’s appropriate department prior to beginning internship

-          Visa gift card to be awarded upon return of program evaluations and materials as thanks for volunteering your time
