New Kiosk Highlights the Benefits
of Guadalupe’s Native Garden

On Tuesday, April 17th the Guadalupe Nipomo Dunes Center in collaboration with State Parks and the City of Guadalupe, installed an information kiosk in the Native Plant Garden located at Campodonico and 7th Streets in Guadalupe.

The Dunes Center would like to thank our partners at State Parks for their generous donation of the refurbished informational kiosk, and delivering it to the Native Garden. Thank you to the City of Guadalupe, and the help of Mike Pena and his team of Public Works Staff, who supported our project and installed the kiosk that same afternoon.

The kiosk includes a new two-sided lock box to highlight the benefits and impact of our Native Garden, and to provide the public with information about the Dunes Center, events and our surrounding natural areas.

The efforts to improve the city lot with a native garden started in 2010 as part of a Service Learning project through the Dune Center’s FITS (Fun in the Sun) Program.  Over the past year our team worked diligently to aquire funding assistance to improve the Guadalupe Native Garden. We received great news last month from PG&E, they will provide $1,500 in funding for garden improvements including a decomposed granite path and signage. 

Special thanks to Kevin Small, Principal with PleinAire, a landscape architecture firm, who reviewed our plant list & layout and has provided his input to improve our site.

Our garden would not look the way it does today without the numerous plant donations and countless hours of volunteer maintenance.

Nipomo Kids Day at Nipomo Community Park
April 7, 2012

On April 7, 2012, the Dunes Center shared a booth with the Exploration Station of Grover Beach, at Nipomo Kids Day at the Nipomo Community Park. The booth offered a variety of activities that included magically moving milk, sand painting, and sands from around the world. The booth received 150 visitors. Lindsey Whitaker, our Education & Administrative Coordinator and Stacy Halverson, Program Director of the Exploration Station did an amazing job in providing one on one attention to our visitors.
