Topic: Dynamics of Shadow and Light: Rick Bury’s Imagery of Winter Solstice Rock Art Sites on Vandenburg Air Force Base by Christopher Ryan and Jon Picciulo
Speaker: Christopher Ryan
Join us on Thursday, June 17th at 6:30 PM to listen to Christopher Ryan speak about the photography of Rick Bury at three Winter Solstice rock art sites. Rick was the head of the Rock Art Documentation Group and unfortunately passed away in 2019.
As part of the Rock Art Documentation (RAD) Group’s work on Vandenberg Air Force Base, Rick produced time-lapse imagery at three Purisimeno Chumash winter solstice observation sites. Rick’s masterful multi-camera technique using simultaneous high-resolution digital imagery and solar filters revealed the remarkable beauty of winter solstice sunset events at the Honda Ridge Rock art site and at Window Cave, and a winter solstice sunrise event at Rattlesnake Shelter. In addition to presenting Rick’s meticulous photo-documentation of these events, some background information is presented about each site, including cultural information and how it was determined that a winter solstice archaeo-astronomical alignment would likely occur.
