Orchid Show is Huge Success!

IMG_1782 cropped700x300The Dunes Center was again honored this year as the benefactor for the Central Coast Orchid Show hosted by the Five Cities Orchid Society. Friday night, Dunes Center supporters and orchid enthusiasts join to get the first look of the orchid show and raise money for the Dunes Center. Preview benefit attendees were welcomed by Moses and his sphinx as they walked into the Hollywood inspired evening. An enticing silent auction and delicious food made the night a glowing success. Restorative Yoga and Dune Retsoration at Guadalupe County Park

700x300Years ago, ice plant was introduced to the dunes in an attempt to stabilize the movement of the sand. However, because ice plant is not native to the dunes habitat, it has had a damaging effect on the ecosystem. In an attempt to restore the Rancho Guadalupe Dunes Preserve to its natural habitat, Santa Barbara County Parks is continuously trying to pull the invasive ice plant from the dunes. (more…)

Dune Forum Student Authors Sign Their Published Work

Author signing 700x300Last summer, the Dunes Center piloted our first ever creative writing program in various elementary and middle schools around the Central Coast. The goal of this course was to teach students to analyze and appreciate nature through their writing and artwork. Each week, the Dunes Center’s education intern, Hanna Navarro, taught students a lesson about the local dunes ecosystem. Students would then write poems and stories about what inspired them in the lesson. (more…)

Intern Program Provides Important Experiences for College Students

Since its establishment, the focus of the intern program was to introduce local college students to the importance of environment education of young students and provide skills that will make them stronger members of the professional community. A Successful Trees of the Season

DSC_1008On the night of December 6th, friends and families filled the Dunes Center for Trees of the Season, an end of the year event to raise funds for the following year’s nature education programs. Generous supporters sponsored twenty four beautifully decorated trees and wreaths, accompanied with presents donated by businesses from around the Central Coast. Guests enjoyed bacon wrapped shrimp, taquitos, and other delicious treats that were donated by local restaurants. (more…)
